Chapter Thirty-Two: Maeve

I threw myself toward Caliban, the bloody knife still fisted in my palm as I slammed into the enchanted guard whose hands still gripped the spear. I screamed, rage and pain and grief bursting from me as I stabbed the guard in the neck, his hot blood spattering across my face, burning me, before I shoved him away from Caliban.

I dropped the knife as Caliban stumbled to his knees, holding the spear that pierced him, his eyes foggy. “No, no, no,” I pleaded, my hands going to the wound. I could feel his life thread sputtering, weakening, and I sobbed.

I cupped his face, tears streaming down my own cheeks. “Don’t, please,” I begged him.

“Sorry, your highness,” Caliban sputtered, his lips stained red with blood. It was so vibrant against his paling skin.

I heard Gwayne yelling but I held fiercely to the assassin, the man who’d given his life to save mine.

“You’ve got to get up,” I said, struggling to my feet even as he slumped further, his hands dangling at his side. “Gwayne!” I shouted, angry that the man hadn’t come to help us. I felt Caliban’s life slipping away and I reached for my magic, holding onto the delicate threads, keeping him alive as I sobbed.

The sounds of fighting hadn’t stopped, and I sensed the guards were still bespelled, fighting against Gwayne until he had no other choice than to kill them. Caliban’s thread was fading, no matter how fast I poured my magic into him.

A thick arm wrapped around my waist and I screamed as I felt Gwayne yank me away from Caliban, whose eyes held mine firmly in their grasp. I kicked and beat at the Huntsman’s thick arm, even as he fought off the guards, dragging me away from Caliban. I stretched my hands out, desperate to hold on to his life.

“I can save him,” I sobbed, but Gwayne didn’t let go.

“He’d never forgive me if I let you die,” Gwayne growled as he swung his ax, burying the blade in the breastplate of a guard before kicking the man as he jerked it back out. I was surrounded by death, life flickering out around me, but I could only focus on the man at the center. The man who slumped forward, only the spear keeping him upright, his blood running down and pooling on the ground, only feet away from the dead queen.

I felt Caliban die, his life thread snapping. A scream tore from my throat and I called to my magic.

It rose to the surface, giddy to be used, knowledge being passed in fractions of seconds, plans made and accepted in another fraction, and finally set in motion. Power burst from my chest in a sphere, blasting me out of Gwayne’s arms and sending the bespelled guards stumbling to the ground.

I half-ran, half-crawled toward Caliban, my magic flinging wide, seeking out the weakened life of the guards around us. It reached for Gwayne, but at my refusal, it passed him, enveloping the other guards.
